And yes, I have to step in and say my 2 cents about spanking. As someone who was repeatedly spanked growing up...and not wimpy ones, but harsh, excruciating and numbing spankings...I completely disagree with the idea of spanking. Because of the way I was punished, I had no respect for my father. All it did was create a fear. I didn't learn anything from that except to hit and to yell and scream. I now fight against my learned temper and urge to hit something or someone when I'm frustrated each day.

I think as long as the parent is disciplining in another way, teaching the child with reasoning and BY EXAMPLE, then spanking isn't necessary. I do agree that there are many parents out there that do not discipline their children at all, afraid to spank, yet defenseless to their children because they are weak and giving in to them. There is a definite must for discipline, but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed when it comes to discipline. I believe one should speak to children with words and not with your hands...

This is in continuation of the entry below...Hey Dr. Hewitt - Regarding your comment on investigating SWEDEN's crime rate - I did some research online on that very thing. And guess what? At: http://travel.state.gov/sweden.htm it says, "Sweden h s a relatively low crime rate, and violent crimes are uncommon." At: http://www.neverhitachild.org/haeuser1.htm is an entire article about Sweden's anti-spanking law, and how it has positively affected families throughout the country, teaching pa ents how to effectively discipline their children without physical punishment. I might add also, in case you were wondering, but, NO I do not believe that yelling or screaming at my son is an acceptable alternative to spanking, either. Maybe you and oth r parents around the world should stop and think about what they are doing, and do some research into how to discipline their children in a kinder way; how they themselves and all adults as children would have liked to have been raised.

This is response to previous guestbook entry, from a Dr. Hewitt. Yes I do have a son, contrary to what you suppose. And I do believe in discipline - but you must be forgetting that 'discipline' is a form of teaching. I believe in teaching my son proper behavior, but not through hitting or regular spankings. All that kind of 'discipline' teaches, is that the parent does not have the patience to deal with their child in other ways, and that because the parent is bigger than the child, they have the right to do so. It is called 'assualt' if we physically hit another person, who is not our child, who we disagree with, or who won't do what we say. Why should we be allowed to assualt our children for the same reasons? I feel sorry for your children, all 11 of them, if they were raised believing that when things don't go your way, the proper way to react is to strike out, instead of finding a better way to resove their problems. And regarding your statement that I must not have any parenting skills; SPANKING is not a skill. Effectively setting rules, limits and guidelines, and finding different ways to enforce those limits, are skills. Teaching is a skill, communicating is a skill. Spanking is not.

Parents who love their children will discipline, which may include s panking. Ever wonder why our society is going to hell in a handbasket? We are raising weak and selfish mothers and fathers and the cycle continues. A child who has been taught self discipline also learns to deal with life's disappointments. etc.. etc...
